Hello, and welcome to this Grubhub dashboard walkthrough. In this video, we’ll show you how to create a segment in the dashboard by using the segment builder.
Segmentation allows you to gather groups of customers based on demographics and spending habits. Those segments can then be used to pull customer data or target certain customers for promotions.
One benefit of using the segment builder instead of uploading a static list is that your segment will dynamically update over time as users meet the criteria specified.
To create a new segment, click the Segments tab on the left-hand panel. From the drop-down menu click + New Segment. Under the “Create your Segment” section click Select under “Build segment.” This will present you with new fields that can be used to build your new segment.
First, enter the name of the segment under “Segment Name” – this will be for your records and not visible to customers. Then select which locations you'd like to target, which will make customers that have transacted at these locations eligible for the segment. By default, all locations are selected. If you’d like to limit the number of locations targeted, deselect the “Select all locations” button and use the drop down menu to select which locations you’d like to include.
Next, you’ll need to define the conditions of your segment, which will outline which customers can be included. Click Add condition then click the first drop-down menu to select which condition you would like to use, either user attributes or order statistics. Then fill out the remaining drop-down menus and fields to correctly define the condition.
You can add as many conditions as you’d like, with each new condition creating an “And” denotation, meaning each condition added will create more criteria a customer will need to meet to be included in the segment. You can also use the “+Or” button within a condition that allows for multiple conditions to be true for the segment. And statements about transactions are separate at this time and do not layer on one another. Or statements do layer onto one another. For example, if you use two “and” statements, one is that the user placed an order between 10am-12pm, and the second is that they last ordered over 90 days ago, those two statements will function separately - the last order placed 90 days ago could have been at any time of day. The system is looking to see whether the user has any order that meets criteria 1 and any order that meets criteria 2, not whether they have any single order that meets both criteria. An OR statement will do the opposite and requires both criteria to be met in a single order.
Once you’ve completed your segment, click the dropdown menus under “Define sorting and limit results'' to choose how you’d like your data displayed. Enter in a number under “# of results” if you’d like the number of customers in the segment to be limited to a certain amount.
Click Save segment to save your segment. You can view your segment in the “View Segments” tab where you can edit, delete, or download the segment data as a CSV file. You will also be able to build promotions that target specific segments.
